ROANOKE, Va. – The new era of Marksmen hockey started on a high note with a 2-1 win in Roanoke.
Fayetteville came out flying to start the opening period throwing the body, getting in shooting lanes and generating great pressure. The Marksmen were 1/1 on the penalty kill, thanks to goaltender Jacob Mucitelli saving everything thrown his way. After pressing the puck into the offensive zone, Evan Pringle was able to knock home a big rebound shot by Lucas Helland at 12:29 in the first.
A few minutes into the second period Marksmen defenseman Ayodele Adeniye found himself at center ice toe to toe for an energizing back and forth fight, firing up the team. Minutes later, Payton Schaly was on a 2-on-2 coming the far side of the boards and looked off the pass for a beautiful bar down finish to put the Marksmen up 2-0 at 7:52 time of play.
After a 2-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, the Marksmen goaltender Jacob Mucitelli was as sharp as could be, keeping the Rail Yard Dawgs off the score sheet. Despite being outshot 14-5 in the 3rd period the Marksmen kept fighting forward looking for win number 1 on the season. The Rail Yard Dawgs were able to connect on the power play late in the 3rd, but it wasn’t enough as the Marksmen were able to hang on and win 2-1 thanks to a spectacular 39 save performance from Jacob Mucitelli.
