FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Marksmen battled for a full 60 minutes to take an exciting 4-3 win over Huntsville.
The period got off to a slow start, but Huntsville struck first after a coast-to-coast move from Dawson Sciarrino, roofing a backhander to give the Havoc a 1-0 lead. Fayetteville responded quickly with yet another Blake Humphrey goal, ripping a wrist shot past Brian Wilson to even up the score. John Woernle scored to give the Marksmen their first lead before the break, but Casper Söderling took a four-minute high sticking penalty that put Fayetteville shorthanded to begin the second.
The Marksmen allowed a few chances on the extended power play, but held strong and maintained their 2-1 lead. The teams slowed the pace in the second period, with Huntsville controlling the play but being unable to break through Kyle Curtin. The Marksmen failed to convert on their first power play of the game after a high sticking penalty by Jack Jaunich, and the game opened up after play returned to five-on-five. Huntsville had multiple breakaways and odd-man rushes that they couldn’t convert, but eventually they did even the game on a pretty passing play that finished with a Jack Jaunich ripper to tie the game before the third.
Fayetteville got to their game quickly in the third, with Shane Murphy’s go-ahead goal igniting the crowd after a net-front drive. Huntsville evened the game once again with a silent wrister from the blue line by Ben Schultheis, but just four minutes later Blake Humphrey scored his eighth goal of the season on a deflection of a shot by Jordan Stock to give the Marksmen the lead inside the final five minutes. The Marksmen shut down the Havoc the rest of the way to earn a 4-3 win and six of the nine points this weekend.
The Marksmen are back in action on Friday, November 13 at 7pm for Friday the 13th presented by Sinister Cuts against the Birmingham Bulls. Get tickets now at marksmenhockey.com
