Marksmen Drop Home Finale, 6-1

March 30, 2018

Fayetteville, NC– The Macon Mayhem dominated the Marksmen from start to finish, earning a 6-1 decision on Fan Appreciation Night at the Crown Coliseum, Friday night during the final home game of the 2017-2018 season.

Macon took the 1-0 lead with only two seconds remaining on the power play early in the first frame. The Mayhem were able to maintain pressure in the Fayetteville zone, until Daniel Gentzler made a pass from the bottom on the circle on the right side to Dylan Vander Esch, who was able to put home the shot on the back door.

The Marksmen were able to kill off a penalty in the final minutes of the period but could not clear their own zone. As the Marksmen returned to full strength, Jake Trask controlled the puck on the goal line to the right of Patrick Spano and found an open Stathis Soumelidis in the low slot for a 2-0 advantage with 1:44 to go in the period.

Macon took advantage of another power play opportunity 4:48 into the second frame. A delayed call on the Marksmen gave the Mayhem a 6-on-4 man-advantage with the extra attacker on the ice. Macon was able to get in close to Spano, who made multiple saves as

The Mayhem made it a 4-0 game with their third power play goal of the game. Spano mishandled the puck behind the net, causing the puck to trickle in front. Spano attempted to dive back in front of the net but could not in time as Trask put the shot home with 5:56 left in the second.

The Marksmen got on the board 6:03 into the third period on an individual effort by Paul Russell. Russell streaked down the right side with pressure from the Mayhem defense, was able to get around the last defender, and beat Charlie Finn far side for the Marksmen’s only goal of the night.

It appeared that Fayetteville had turned the pressure onto Macon but were unable to hold the puck in the offensive zone, giving the Mayhem a 2-on-0. Trask took control of the puck and moved to the right side as he entered the Marksmen end of the ice. He made uncontested pass across to John Siemer, who increased the score to 5-1 with 6:30 of play remaining in the contest.

Trask scored the final goal of the game one minute later, on his own individual effort. He was able to out maneuver two Marksmen defensemen, finding himself alone in front of the net. Trask made no mistake with the chance, finishing the play for a final score of 6-1.
